The Smile - Live on tour in 2024
THE SMILE emerged in the midst of the pandemic, and their debut album ‘A Light for Attracting Attention’ already revealed the harmonious musical connection between Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and drummer Tom Skinner. When Yorke’s still magical voice overlays the tracks, the trio reaches unheard-of heights. This is why THE SMILE are by no means an extension of the RADIOHEAD cosmos, but were initially a very independent attempt to bring song ideas from the loneliness of lockdown to life through a finely assembled band.
Initially, this also applied to a limited extent to the debut album ‘A Light For Attracting Attention’. But ever since their fantastic performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in July 2022 - which can be heard on YouTube - the joy of playing has taken over. On 9 January, THE SMILE released ‘Friend of a Friend’, their first single of their upcoming album ‘Wall Of Eyes’. On 26 January, this second album was released and it consistently continues the musical idea. The tracks already released do not deny their origins in Kraut and Prog Rock. And it is still Skinner who keeps his two companions on course with his drumming and keeps the dark atmosphere in check as best he can. In addition, ‘Wall Of Eyes’ contains string arrangements by the London Contemporary Orchestra, which adds another multi-faceted dimension to the upcoming record. THE SMILE are going on tour again this summer and will be coming to Germany for five shows.
